Always a country music station, the station launched on April 29, 1954 with the call sign WAFC. In 1972, WAFC switched its callsign to WKDW. On February 13, 1992, WSGM (now WSVO) at 93.1 FM (which was broadcasting an oldies/classic rock format at that time) became a sister station of WKDW when the callsign for 93.1 FM was changed to WKDW-FM.
WKDW was a sister sation of WKDW-FM (93.1 FM) until March 28, 1994 when the AM station switched its call sign to WBGT. Five months later on September 8, WBGT yet again changed the call sign to WINF.
On January 31, 1996, the WKDW call sign was reassigned from 93.1 FM to 900 AM by the Federal Communications Commission.
