]WIBX is a talk radio station based in Utica, New York. It is owned by Townsquare Media and has been on the air since December 5, 1925. The station was originally owned by Grid Leak, Inc., a local radio dealer, and operated from their store. WIBX initially operated at 1460 kHz, but moved to 1280 kHz in late 1926 and then to 1260 kHz in April 1927. In 1928, the station was acquired by the Boston Store to keep it in Utica. John C. Drummond took over the station in April 1928. The Federal Radio Commission moved WIBX to 1200 kHz on November 11, and on December 1, the station relocated its studios to the First National Bank Building.
The Buffalo Broadcasting Corporation acquired WIBX in August 1929, and it was later sold to a partnership of Percy B Brown and Scott Howe Bowen in March 1931. Bowen eventually acquired full ownership of the station. WIBX affiliated with the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) in 1935 and remains a CBS Radio Network affiliate to this day.
The North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement moved WIBX to 1230 kHz on March 29, 1941. However, the station was limited to 250 watts on this frequency and could not serve Rome at night. In 1946, the Rome Sentinel applied for a 5,000-watt station serving both cities, which eventually became WRUN. In response, WIBX sought to upgrade to its own 5,000-watt facility and was granted a move to 950 kHz by the Federal Communications Commission on May 2, 1947. The new facility, located in Whitesboro, went on the air in early 1948.
The WIBX studios relocated to Whitesboro in the early 1960s. An FM sister station called WIBQ (now WLZW) was added on January 1, 1974. WIBX had an earlier FM station at 96.9 FM, but it went off the air in the early 1950s.
The Bowen family sold WIBX to Marathon Communications in 1979. Afterward, the station's format shifted away from music and towards more news, talk, and sports programming. Rebs, Inc. acquired WIBX in 1985, and music programming was dropped entirely. Maritime Broadcasting bought the station in 1988, followed by 950 Communications Corporation in 1992, Forever Broadcasting in 1996, and Regent Communications (which later became Townsquare Media) in 1999. Regent moved its stations to studios in Marcy in 2003. [*]
